There aren’t many sports with as much fashion history as tennis. From the legacy of Wimbledon whites to tennis-inspired fashion trends, the relationship between the sartorial and the court has grown narrower and narrower. Just ask Naomi Osaka, who has blown the doors off the sport and re-written its fashion rules. And this week, with the U.S. Open kicking off in New York City, there’s plenty more fashion to keep in focus.
We aren’t too far into the tournament yet, but there are already some standouts – from Sabalenka’s 127-carat gold necklace to Townsend’s beaded bodysuit. These are the on-court fashion moments from this year’s U.S. Open that we’re already talking about…
Naomi Osaka
Our expectations were high for Osaka – and she did not disappoint. For her first outing at the US Open, the tennis star was styled by Law Roach, in a custom piece by Who Decides Wear.
Aryna Sabalenka
Sabalenka beat out Osorio in her first match as she begins to defend her title at this year’s U.S. Open. She wore an orange, netted Nike dress with a custom 127-carat gold The Prism necklace by Material Good, adorned with vibrant multi-coloured gemstones like sapphires, tourmalines and tanzanites. She wore the necklace and matching earrings for an earlier match, too.
Taylor Townsend
The American professional tennis player and former world No. 1 wore a black, red and white striped dress completed with beaded fringe. Many fans thought this look was in honour of her playing on Trinidad and Tobago’s Independence Day (which falls on 31 August).
Zheng Qinwen
Qinwen won her opening match in a turquoise and white Nike fit, complete with matching turquoise sweat bands and tennis shoes.
Sára Bejlek
Bejlek, the 20-year-old professional tennis player from the Czech Republic, won her opening round game in a matching neon pink ensemble. But her hair was where the magic happened: a bubble ponytail complete with rhinestone stars and barrets.
Iva Jovic
adidas kitted out Iva Jovic for her U.S. Open first match, where she walked out in a plum-toned bubble skirt and matching jacket and visor. The jacket was later shed to reveal a cut-out white bodysuit.
Madison Keys
Madison Keys’ first US Open look came courtesy of Nike, including a turqouise dress with mesh panelling, white shoes, and a black cap.
Frances Tiafoe
Tiafoe has been kitted out by Lululemon for the US Open, and its a Flamingo pink set – right down to the socks and headband.
