Boston police say the shooting stemmed from an argument involving suspect Tyler Broomes and his girlfriend’s family.
An 18-year-old Dorchester man is accused of shooting his girlfriend’s mother in the head on Mother’s Day before shooting another man outside a Kingsdale Street home, according to Boston police.
Tyler Broomes was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the May 10 shooting, which happened around 6:40 p.m. at 69 Kingsdale St. in Dorchester. The woman, 42, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, while the man, also 42, suffered non-life-threatening wounds, police said.
Broomes faces charges of assault with intent to murder and unlawful possession of a firearm, and discharging a firearm and striking a building in connection with the double shooting, according to prosecutors.
Investigators say Broomes had been dating the female victim’s daughter and became involved in an argument outside her home on Mother’s Day evening before allegedly opening fire.
Officers responding to multiple 911 calls found the two victims suffering from gunshot wounds outside the residence, police said.
At the time of the shooting, Boston police said investigators believed the violence was targeted and that there was no ongoing threat to the public. Superintendent Paul McLaughlin told reporters at the scene that detectives were canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and surveillance footage.
Broomes was arraigned on Wednesday in Dorchester District Court, where a judge ordered him held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing set for May 21, according to DotNews.
“As if this set of facts isn’t tragic enough, the reality of these victims being shot on Mother’s Day adds another level of shock and sadness,” District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a statement. “I pray for the recovery of both victims, and I believe a dangerousness hearing is perfectly appropriate in this act of terrible violence.”
Police have not publicly released a motive. The investigation remains ongoing.
