Strategic Partnership Strengthens Environmental Protection
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has announced a new partnership with Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) to strengthen mangrove conservation and biodiversity research across the emirate. The collaboration marks an important step in advancing environmental sustainability and protecting coastal ecosystems in Abu Dhabi.
Under a two-year agreement, TAQA has been appointed as the official partner of the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative (ADMI) partnership program. The agreement positions the company as the lead and exclusive sponsor for two major environmental initiatives designed to support scientific research, biodiversity monitoring and marine conservation.
The partnership highlights Abu Dhabi’s continued efforts to safeguard its natural ecosystems while integrating modern technologies and collaborative research into environmental protection strategies. By combining resources, expertise and innovation, both organisations aim to support long-term ecological sustainability.
AI Technology to Monitor Mangrove Biodiversity
One of the key initiatives supported by TAQA is the Mangrove Biodiversity Automated Monitoring program. The project, launched under the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative, introduces an innovative system designed to track biodiversity in mangrove ecosystems using advanced technology.
The program will deploy the Mangrove Nature Tracking Assistant (MANTA), a first-of-its-kind monitoring system in the Arabian Gulf. MANTA combines artificial intelligence, advanced ecological monitoring tools and community-driven science to observe wildlife activity in both natural and restored mangrove habitats.
Mangroves are among the most important coastal ecosystems, providing natural protection against erosion, improving water quality and supporting marine biodiversity. However, monitoring these ecosystems has traditionally required time-consuming field research and manual data collection.
Through the use of artificial intelligence and automated monitoring technologies, MANTA will allow researchers to gather real-time ecological data more efficiently. The system is expected to significantly improve the accuracy of biodiversity monitoring while supporting evidence-based conservation planning.
Understanding Key Species and Ecosystem Health
The monitoring initiative focuses on analysing biodiversity within mangrove habitats, particularly species that act as indicators of ecosystem health. Fish and crabs are among the primary species being studied, as their population trends can reveal critical information about environmental conditions and ecological balance.
By observing these species over time, scientists can better understand how mangrove ecosystems respond to environmental changes and restoration efforts. The data collected through the monitoring system will help environmental experts identify potential threats, track habitat recovery and guide future conservation strategies.
Accurate and continuous data collection is essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems. The use of AI-driven monitoring tools will allow researchers to assess biodiversity trends with greater precision, ultimately supporting more effective environmental decision-making.
This scientific approach is expected to strengthen conservation planning and ensure the long-term sustainability of Abu Dhabi’s coastal habitats.
Supporting Marine Conservation Through Community Awareness
In addition to the biodiversity monitoring program, TAQA has also sponsored the 2025 Marine Turtle Festival organised by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi. The event focuses on raising public awareness about marine conservation and the protection of endangered species.
The festival features the release of rescued and rehabilitated sea turtles back into their natural habitats, highlighting the agency’s ongoing efforts to safeguard marine wildlife. It also serves as a platform to educate the public about the importance of protecting marine ecosystems and preserving biodiversity.
Community engagement plays a vital role in conservation. Events like the Marine Turtle Festival encourage residents, researchers and environmental advocates to participate in environmental initiatives and contribute to broader sustainability goals.
Through its sponsorship, TAQA aims to support both scientific research and public awareness efforts that promote responsible environmental stewardship.
Leadership Perspectives on the Partnership
Maitha Mohamed Al Hameli, Director of the Marine Biodiversity Division at the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, described the partnership as a major step forward in protecting mangrove ecosystems.
She noted that integrating advanced technologies with ecological research can significantly enhance conservation efforts. According to Al Hameli, collaborations like this not only improve scientific capabilities but also encourage citizen science, knowledge sharing and broader community participation in environmental protection.
From TAQA’s perspective, the partnership reflects the company’s commitment to sustainability and responsible environmental management.
Noel Aoun, Group Chief Strategy Officer at TAQA, emphasised the importance of science, technology and community collaboration in protecting natural ecosystems. He highlighted that supporting initiatives such as the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative aligns with the company’s long-term sustainability goals and its responsibility to contribute positively to environmental preservation.
The Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative and Its Global Vision
The Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative was launched in 2022 during the visit of Prince William, Prince of Wales, to the United Arab Emirates. During the visit, Prince William met Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at Jubail Mangrove Park in Abu Dhabi, where the initiative was formally introduced.
The initiative aims to position Abu Dhabi as a global hub for mangrove conservation, research and innovation. It focuses on promoting nature-based solutions, protecting coastal ecosystems and encouraging international collaboration in environmental science.
Since its launch, the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative has brought together a wide network of partners committed to environmental sustainability. The program currently includes eight international partners and 15 local organisations working together to advance mangrove research and conservation projects.
Through collaborative partnerships, technological innovation and community engagement, the initiative continues to expand its impact in protecting coastal ecosystems.
Advancing Sustainable Coastal Ecosystems
Mangroves play a critical role in maintaining ecological balance, supporting marine biodiversity and mitigating the impacts of climate change. By investing in advanced monitoring technologies and research initiatives, Abu Dhabi is strengthening its ability to protect these vital ecosystems.
The partnership between TAQA and the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi represents a meaningful step toward integrating innovation with environmental conservation. With the support of artificial intelligence, scientific collaboration and public engagement, the initiative aims to ensure that mangrove ecosystems remain healthy and resilient for future generations.
As Abu Dhabi continues to expand its environmental initiatives, projects like the Mangrove Biodiversity Automated Monitoring program demonstrate how technology and partnerships can work together to support sustainable ecosystem management and long-term biodiversity protection.
