Dorchester man arrested for allegedly hitting police officer with moped

A Dorchester man was arrested Friday after allegedly striking a police officer with his moped on Wednesday, police said.

Angel Gonzalez, 22, of Dorchester, is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, leaving the scene of personal injury, and failure to stop, the Boston Police Department said in a press release.

Around 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, a Boston Police officer approached a moped that was weaving in and out of pedestrians near Washington Street in downtown Boston, police said.

When the operator accelerated, the officer was knocked to the ground, police said. The officer was assessed by EMS but declined further treatment.

Around 8:45 p.m. on Friday, an officer was conducting traffic enforcement in the Theater District when they observed vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, police said.

After checking the vehicle’s registration information, the officer discovered an active arrest warrant for the operator. The officer initiated a traffic stop and arrested Gonzalez, police said.

Attorney information for Gonzalez was not publicly listed as of Sunday night.
