Surat grandmother murder: grandson Harsh Patel held after argument over unemployment

A 23-year-old man allegedly killed his 70-year-old grandmother in Surat’s Parvat Patiya area after a heated argument over his unemployment, police said on Thursday.

The victim, Leelaben Chaudhary, was found dead at her residence on the third floor of Anmol Complex under the Puna police station limits. According to investigators, her grandson, Harsh Patel, attacked her with a kitchen knife and slit her throat during a domestic dispute.

Police said the accused initially tried to mislead them by fabricating a story. When officers reached the scene, Harsh claimed that his grandmother had attempted to harm herself and suffered fatal injuries during a struggle when he tried to intervene. He reportedly repeated the same version to neighbours and relatives.

However, inconsistencies in his statement and forensic evidence at the scene raised suspicion. During sustained interrogation, Harsh confessed to the crime, police said.

According to officials, Leelaben had been raising Harsh and his sister for nearly a decade after their mother remarried and moved to another locality. Harsh had been unemployed for a long time and was often criticised by his grandmother for not working or taking responsibility.

On the day of the incident, other family members were not present at home. His sister had gone out for work, and his wife was staying at her parental home. Police said an argument broke out around noon when Leelaben once again advised him to find a job. In a fit of anger, Harsh allegedly picked up a kitchen knife and attacked her.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Ajit Singh Parmar said the accused has been arrested and the weapon used in the crime has been recovered. A case of murder has been registered, and further investigation is underway.

The incident has left residents in the area shaken and once again brought attention to the dangers of unresolved domestic conflicts escalating into violence.
