“It is treatable, I am an excellent hands, and I am expecting this to soon be behind me in a short amount of time.”
Marc Bertrand, co-host of 98.5 The Sports Hub’s midday show, announced near the end of Wednesday’s program that he is being treated for cancer.
Bertrand, who has been paired with Scott Zolak on the “Zolak and Bertrand” program since February 2015, said he was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer a couple of months ago.
Bertrand, 41, said he is having an ablation procedure at Mass Eye and Ear to “kill my tumor” this week and is aiming to be back on the air next Wednesday, the day the Patriots open the regular season.
“It’s the most common type of thyroid cancer and it is highly treatable so before anybody starts to worry about me — especially Zo, he loves to worry about me a lot — you can rest assured it’s gonna be fine,” said Bertrand, who has been with the station since its launch in August 2009.
“It is treatable, I am an excellent hands, and I am expecting this to soon be behind me in a short amount of time.”
Bertrand said he initially did not intend to talk about his diagnosis on the air. But he chose to, he said, because he wanted to emphasize the importance of getting screened for cancer, something the show’s hosts have discussed before.
“I have no symptoms, that is not why I discovered this,” said Bertrand, who said a screening years ago alerted him and his doctor that a future cancer diagnosis was a possibility.
“Obviously it’s great to be feeling good,” said Bertrand, “but it also serves as an excellent reminder that for people who have suffered through far more dangerous types of cancers, a lot of it started with feeling totally normal.
“There are preventative screenings that are necessary, and if your doctor is telling you to do those things, you should go do those things.”
