The tackle was called “reckless”, “nasty” and “horrible” by fans and, at half-time, assistant coach Paul Okon was clearly furious.
“Terrible tackle,” he said.
“We understand the referee played advantage, but he doesn’t come back and book the player. Disappointing, but we have to move on and do better in the second half.”
Sports presenter Adrian Arciuli, who was at the game for SBS, called it “heartbreaking”.
“Absolutely heartbreaking. Just watched Jordy Bos get carried into the locker room,” he said.
“Couldn’t put any weight on his left leg. He won’t be back and let’s hope it’s not a serious injury. Just spoke with Paul Okon and was furious no yellow card was shown.”
At just 23, Bos is considered to be one of Australia’s brightest young football talents.
The sight of the young man from Hoppers Crossing (in Melbourne) watching on during the penalty shootout was decsribed as devastating by fans.
There was an outpouring of support for him after the match, tinged with contempt for the referee due to the non-call.
“Jordy Bos in tears is just heartbreaking,” one fan said.
And another: “The cut to Jordy Bos on crutches, crying, has finished me.”
While another blasted: “Jordy Bos comes out after the game ON F****** CRUTCHES after a horrible tackle that didn’t get a free kick let alone a card.”
Injury analysis account, Physio Scout said, said Boss would now need scans.
“Hyperextension injuries can vary significantly in severity, ranging from bone bruising to ligamentous damage. MCL/ACL not ruled out here,” they said.
“Bos was unable to weight-bear, but it’s worth noting that bone bruising around the knee can also be significantly painful and limiting.
“Expected Recovery Times: Bone bruise: 1–3 weeks. MCL sprain: 4-6 weeks plus. ACL injury: 9-plus months
“Unfortunately, scans will be necessary to determine the extent of the injury. Let’s hope this is the base case scenario and it’s only a painful bone bruise.”
Bos had been huge during the tournament to help get Australia to the Round of 32.
Melbourne City FC said: “Our thoughts are with Jordy Bos after he was forced from the field following a heavy challenge.”
While a fan said: “Prayers for Jordy Bos. Did everything he could have this tournament. He should be holding his head up very high.”
Another account said: “Australia’s fingers are crossed for you, Jordy. We’re with you all the way.”
