Cleveland Browns head coach has stated previously that the quarterback competition is between Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson, with the team in the middle of mandatory minicamp. On Wednesday, Sanders revealed how he’s mentally approaching the situation ahead of the 2026-27 season.
The 24-year-old quarterback sort of called out media members on Wednesday, claiming it’s not really a competition as it is portrayed to the public, according to Scott Petrak of the Chronicle-Telegram and Medina Gazette. Instead, Sanders is putting all of his attention on developing his game and improving himself as a person.
“I think the way ya’ll look at things is different than how we look at things,” said Sanders about the quarterback situation in Cleveland. “We look at coming to practice every day, being the best player we can be as an individual, and as a good teammate. Ya’ll look at it as like a competition… I’m just focused on developing as a player.
“Doing everything, getting as comfortable as I can in the offense and the scheme, and playing with that confidence I had,” continued Sanders. “So, I think that’s all I’m really looking for and trying to prove every day. Whether it’s mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually. I’m just trying to be a better person every day. Wherever that falls into place will fall into place.”

At the end of the day, the Monken will eventually name a starting quarterback for the 2026-27 season. Shedeur Sanders is certainly in consideration, alongside Deshaun Watson.
The former Colorado Buffaloes star was a fifth-round pick by the Browns in the 2025 NFL Draft. He ended up playing eight games for the club last season, starting seven games. It was a roller coaster of an experience, as Sanders finished his rookie campaign with 1,400 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and a 56.6% completion percentage.
