Sharjah women sweep Vice President’s Cup

Sharjah Women’s Sports Club won titles across all age groups at the Vice President’s Cup athletics championship, underlining their depth from junior level through to senior competition.

The event was held from April 10 to 12, with Sharjah taking the overall cups in junior, youth and senior categories. Khorfakkan Women’s Sports Club also returned with a number of strong results, particularly in the junior and senior races and field events.

Sharjah set the tone early in the junior girls’ competition. Sarah Fahad won gold in the 100m hurdles, with Maria Fahad taking silver in the same event. Reem Mohammed Al Badawi claimed gold in the long jump and set a new national record, while Rodina Mohammed won gold in the hammer throw.

There was further success in the shot put, where Hanan Ibrahim won gold, Mariam Murad took silver and Ahoud Mohammed finished with bronze.

On the track, Alia Khalid Saeed won gold in the 400m and added bronze in the 100m. Fatima Jassim Ahli took silver in the 400m. Sharjah’s mixed relay team of Sarah Fahad, Alia Khalid Al Muhairi, Alia Khalid Saeed and Fawaghi Hamid also won gold.

The final day brought more medals. Sarah Fahad added another gold in the 400m hurdles. Samar Saleh won both the triple jump and high jump, and her triple jump mark set a new national record. Reem Mohammed Al Badawi took silver in the high jump.

Hanan Ibrahim won gold in the discus, while Al Yazia Tariq Abdul Salam topped the javelin. Fawaghi Hamid earned silver in the 800m, and Alia Khalid Al Muhairi won gold in the 3000m.

Sharjah’s senior athletes were just as strong. Mahra Abdulrahim Anqalia won gold in both the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles. Fatima Ali Hassan won the 100m and 200m double, while Abeer Ibrahim Al Balushi took gold in the long jump.

The 4x100m relay team of Mahra Abdulrahim, Fatima Ali Hassan, Abeer Ibrahim and Adhraa Adel also finished first. Adhraa Adel later added silver in the 800m.

Khorfakkan Women’s Sports Club also made its mark. In the junior division, Khadija Mohammed Ahmed Al Hamsh won silver in both the 100m and 200m, while Maitha Juma Al Dhanhani took silver in the javelin. In the senior competition, Aisha Mohammed Obaid Al Hamoudi won bronze in the 100m.

Hind Al-Kabawi, technical director of athletics at Sharjah Women’s Sports Clubs, said the results were a sign of steady progress in the programme.

“The diversity of achievements across track and field events, along with the new records set, confirms that the training is clearly translating into performance in competitions,” she said.

She said the focus remains on long-term preparation and giving athletes more chances to compete and gain experience.
