Political uncertainty has intensified following a courtesy meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar, and MP Supriya Sule in New Delhi on Wednesday. The interaction came shortly after Pawar visited Jantar Mantar to express support for student leader Abhijeet Dipke and activist Sonam Wangchuk amid their ongoing protests.
The meeting has sparked speculation over the cohesion of the INDIA bloc at a time when Opposition parties are attempting to present a united front against the Centre. The Congress, Samajwadi Party and Shiv Sena (UBT), among others, have backed the student protests, while Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, along with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, were recently detained during a demonstration near the Prime Minister’s residence. Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray also visited the protest site at Jantar Mantar.
Against this backdrop, Pawar’s meeting with the Prime Minister has fuelled questions about the NCP (SP)’s political strategy ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Reports suggesting that the party may support the Centre’s proposed Delimitation Bill have further intensified speculation about possible differences within the Opposition alliance, even as Prakash Ambedkar has called for a Maharashtra bandh.
Political observers point to three possible reasons behind Pawar’s approach:
- Strategic balancing: By maintaining communication with both the Opposition and the Centre, Pawar preserves political flexibility and bargaining power.
- Protecting regional interests: A more pragmatic position on issues such as delimitation could be aimed at safeguarding Maharashtra’s parliamentary representation and the party’s long-term political interests.
- Positioning as a mediator: Maintaining working relations across the political spectrum allows Pawar to project himself as a leader capable of facilitating dialogue between the government and the Opposition.
Whether the meeting reflects a broader political realignment or was merely a routine courtesy call remains unclear. However, it has added to speculation over Opposition unity ahead of a crucial Monsoon Session, where several contentious issues are expected to dominate the parliamentary agenda.
