Scissors found from ashes of woman who died days after surgery in Madhya Pradesh

A case of suspected medical negligence has sparked outrage in Madhya Pradesh’s Sehore district, where a pair of surgical scissors was found from the cremated remains of a woman who died days after undergoing a sterilisation procedure.

The sharp-edged tool was found in a charred state when her ashes were being collected, her family members claimed.

HEALTH DECLINED DAY AFTER OPERATION

The woman had undergone a tubectomy at a local government hospital on January 12. However, her condition started deteriorating just the next day.

Experiencing pain, she was initially brought to Sehore district hospital and was subsequently referred to Bhopal for better medical care, where she died during treatment.

Her family has alleged that the pair of scissors were left inside her abdomen during the erstwhile operation due to negligence by the doctors.

The foreign object then caused an infection, resulting in her death, they alleged.

The family has demanded strict action against those responsible for the alleged negligence.

DOCTOR TRANSFERRED, PROBE ON

As the matter escalated, the Madhya Pradesh Health Department transferred the doctor who had performed the operation. An investigation into the matter was also launched.

Speaking to the media, Dr Prafull Kumar, Block Medical Officer (BMO), Civil Hospital Bhairunda asserted that scissors are generally not used in sterilisation operations, saying that the real cause of death can be ascertained only when the post-mortem report is released.

He added that it would be probed where the scissors came from. The resulting facts will help clarify the matter, the health official said.

Further action in the matter will be taken accordingly, the BMO added.
