South Australia’s home of women’s cricket is set for a major glow-up, with Karen Rolton Oval to receive a $10 million upgrade designed to strengthen the future of the game and create a more spectator-friendly venue in the heart of Adelaide.
The SA Government has committed $5 million towards the project, with the upgrade forming a key part of the South Australian Cricket Association’s broader masterplan to transform the site into a world-class sporting precinct.
The works will include brand new 1500 lux lighting to meet updated Australian standards for domestic cricket, along with accessible new spectator terracing on the eastern embankment, an area currently steep and difficult to access. The existing 750 lux lights will be relocated to Oval 2, helping create an additional lit venue for both cricket and community sport.
It’s a significant investment in a venue that already plays a major role across the state’s sporting landscape. While Karen Rolton Oval is best known as the home of women’s cricket in South Australia, it also supports elite competition, development pathways, football and a wide range of community events.
The timing is especially important as women’s cricket continues to surge in popularity, with more women and girls taking part through clubs, schools and elite-level competition. The upgraded facilities are intended to help keep pace with that growth, while ensuring players, officials and spectators have access to infrastructure that matches the standard of the sport on the field.
The project will also help position Karen Rolton Oval as an even more valuable major events venue. As a Tier 2 ground, it can be used for high-profile fixtures and international tournaments when Adelaide Oval is unavailable, making it an important part of South Australia’s broader sporting infrastructure.
The finished upgrade is set to be unveiled in time for the Australian women’s team to play two One Day Internationals against New Zealand under lights at the venue for the first time, a milestone moment that will showcase the venue on a bigger stage.
Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing Rhiannon Pearce said, “Karen Rolton Oval is such a great venue, ideally located in the heart of the city, and these works will take it to a whole new level.”
“It’s fundamental that we have appropriate facilities to cater for the increased interest and participation in women and girls’ cricket and we are pleased to partner with SACA to deliver this.”
“The Malinauskas Government is determined to get kids off screens and into organised sport and other activities and this requires this type of investment.”
Will Rayner, SACA Chairman and President said, “This investment in Karen Rolton Oval is a major step forward for women’s cricket in South Australia — not only for the professional game, but for community and junior cricket.”
“The upgraded lights will enhance night matches and lift the experience for players, fans and broadcasters alike, while ensuring this venue serves the next generation of cricketers.”
“It reflects a strong shared commitment with the State Government to providing world‑class facilities and growing the game at every level.”
