Ruben Amorim tipped to take Premier League job just days after Man Utd sack

Sol Campbell believes Tottenham are “probably” already holding discussions with Ruben Amorim about potentially taking over from Thomas Frank at the north London club.

The former Spurs defender suggested the Portuguese coach would be the perfect candidate to succeed Frank, who finds himself under mounting pressure with the team languishing in 14th position in the Premier League.

Speaking to Sky Bet, Campbell said: “They’ll be looking at him. They’re probably talking to him now, that wouldn’t surprise me. I don’t think he’ll go back to Portugal.”

He added: “Tottenham will be talking to him to see if there’s any situation going on – there’ll be people talking behind the scenes.”

Spurs’ woes deepened last week when they suffered an FA Cup third-round exit against Aston Villa.

Amorim departed Manchester United last week following a turbulent spell that saw the club finish 15th in the Premier League during his first campaign in charge.

The 40-year-old’s tenure at Old Trafford lasted just 14 months and was marred by poor results on the pitch alongside a reported falling out with director of football Jason Wilcox.

His struggles in English football came as something of a surprise given his impressive track record in his homeland, where he guided Sporting Lisbon to two league championships.

Despite significant investment exceeding £200 million on new signings during the summer, United showed little improvement under his stewardship and failed to mount a serious challenge for any major silverware.

The Portuguese manager has since returned home following his dismissal.

Campbell acknowledged that Frank is a quality manager but emphasised the stark contrast between leading Brentford and managing a club of Tottenham’s stature.

“Thomas Frank is a top manager, but he’s not at Brentford anymore – it’s a different animal. Tottenham is a big club and people are demanding,” he said.

The former England international suggested the Danish coach is experiencing levels of scrutiny he has never encountered before in his career.

“He’s probably never felt this kind of football pressure before. Pressure exists everywhere at the highest level, but at Tottenham it comes at you in different ways,” Campbell explained.

He noted that supporters expect both victories and attractive football, with the club constantly pushing to progress in a meaningful way.

Campbell was also critical of how Amorim conducted himself during his time at Old Trafford, describing his approach as “naive”.

“How naive of Ruben Amorim… unless you win on a regular basis – you’re not going to get control,” he remarked.

The former defender argued that the era of managers wielding complete authority, as Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger once did, has passed.

Campbell suggested Amorim failed to grasp the enormity of managing one of football’s most iconic institutions.

“He didn’t realise how massive Manchester United is. It’s a gigantic club. It’s one of the biggest, iconic clubs in the world. How are you going to control that? That’s nonsense,” he said.

He stressed that success at United requires understanding the club’s history, fanbase and unique culture rather than attempting to import methods from elsewhere.
