Ruben Amorim lands new role six months after being sacked by Manchester United

Former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has been appointed as the new manager of Italian giants AC Milan.

The Portuguese signed a two-year deal to replace Massimiliano Allegri, who was sacked after failing to qualify for the Champions League.

Milan said that the 41-year-old brings a “modern dominant tactical approach”, with the club’s owner Gerry Cadinale adding: “Amorim is one of the most prepared and innovative coaches.

“Ruben believes in an offensive, high-intensity football. His philosophy fits perfectly with our vision.”

Upon signing his new deal, Amorim said: “There are ambitions that stay with you throughout your career, and coaching AC Milan has always been one of mine.

“I know exactly what this club means: history, prestige and an extraordinary fanbase around the world.

“It is a challenge I embrace with pride and enthusiasm.”

Amorim’s exit, together with his coaching staff, could have amounted to a bill of £15.9million.

It is unclear whether the Red Devils will have to fork out the rest of the sum, with reports in Italy claiming Amorim will forego the year’s pay he was still owed by United.

The 41-year-old departed Old Trafford after a horrendous 14 months.

Before signing with United, he achieved great success with Sporting Lisbon, ending the club’s 19-year wait for a league title.

He won the Portuguese league with Sporting in 2020-21 and in 2023-24.

Amorim came in for Erik Ten Hag at Old Trafford in November 2024 after United rejected his request to take over at the end of the season.

He left the Red Devils in sixth place, with United saying the reason for his sacking was to “give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish”.

Michael Carrick came in to replace the Portuguese, guiding United to Champions League football and a third-place finish.

Sources close to Amorim suggested he would step in at his former side, Benfica, last month, following Jose Mourinho’s being set to rejoin Real Madrid.

No move materialised, and Fulham’s former manager Marco Silva has taken over.

Amorim’s first game in charge will be a pre-season match against Celtic on July 25.

Fittingly, Amorim’s last pre-season game will be against his former employers, Manchester United, in Wroclaw, Poland, on August 15.
