Roy Keane has lauded Kobbie Mainoo’s match-winning contribution against Liverpool, describing the moment as particularly special for a homegrown talent who has navigated a testing spell in recent months.
The Manchester United midfielder struck the decisive goal in a thrilling 3-2 victory at Old Trafford, firing home from the edge of the box after Liverpool failed to clear Luke Shaw’s delivery.
“It’s a great moment for him. He’s had his challenges over the last few months. That’s the journey of any young player. He’s taken his opportunity. To score the winning goal for any local kid, it’s fantastic,” Keane told Sky Sports.
Daniel Sturridge, speaking alongside Keane on Sky Sports, reflected on the psychological burden Mainoo faced during his time out of the starting lineup.

“For Kobbie, it was a difficult time. Mentally, hearing your manager say ‘you’re up against Bruno Fernandes.’ Now, for him to come back into the squad week in and week out, he’s building some momentum,” Sturridge said.
The former Liverpool striker outlined specific areas where the 21-year-old could develop further.
“I would love to see him go to the next level. I’d like to see him work on his explosiveness which he will get because he is only 21. And I want to see him bulk up,” Sturridge added.
Keane echoed Sturridge’s assessment, suggesting Mainoo possesses the raw ability but lacks the regularity in his performances to truly elevate his game.
“I think Kobbie does have the capability to do that, but he doesn’t show it consistently,” Keane observed.

The former United captain believes physical development remains the key to unlocking the midfielder’s full potential.
“If he bulks himself up and gets explosive, we’re talking about a guy that can go to the next level,” Keane stated.
Both pundits agreed that at just 21, Mainoo has ample time to add the strength and dynamism required to become a more complete midfielder.

The victory arrived just three days after Mainoo committed his future to the club by signing a five-year deal, capping a remarkable turnaround for a player who failed to start a single league match under former manager Ruben Amorim.
United’s triumph secured their return to the Champions League following a two-year absence, whilst also completing their first league double over Liverpool since the 2015/16 campaign.
The result further strengthens Michael Carrick’s case for permanent appointment as head coach, with the interim boss now having defeated all five of England’s traditional elite clubs: Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea.
