Will the Red Sox play in heaven in 2027?
No, it’s Iowa.
The Sox and the Royals are scheduled to play in MLB’s “Field of Dreams” game next year, in Dyersville, Iowa, on Aug. 12.
MLB made the announcement Friday, a day after the Phillies and Twins played in the third installment of the game staged at the iconic filming location of the 1989 “Field of Dreams” movie. The Phillies’ win over the Twins followed White Sox-Yankees in 2021 and Reds-Cubs in 2022.
Next year, the Thursday contest will be a home game for the Royals. The teams will be off on Friday and resume their three-game series at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., on Saturday.
“To have the Red Sox take the field in Iowa, in a place that reminds us why people fall in love with baseball, will be incredibly special,” Red Sox president Sam Kennedy said in a statement released by MLB. “Part of what has allowed baseball to endure for generations is its ability to evolve while still holding onto the traditions, memories, and shared experiences that give the game its meaning. We can’t wait to experience that in Dyersville with our players, our fans, and baseball fans everywhere.”
The caveat to all of MLB’s 2027 plans is the Dec. 1 expiration of the collective bargaining agreement with the players’ union and impending lockout.
The previous lockout, in 2021-22, ended in time for the sides to salvage a full 162-game season. It’s unclear if the same will be true in 2027.
