Red Sox take on Yankees in Wild Card Series Game 1 – NBC Boston

What to Know

  • The Red Sox and Yankees are kicking off their Wild Card Series on Tuesday night in the Bronx.
  • It’s the second straight year these teams have met in the Wild Card Series, with the Yankees winning last year in three games.
  • Cam Schlittler (14-6, 1.95 ERA) will get the start for New York, with Payton Tolle (9-6, 3.03 ERA) getting the Game 1 nod for Boston.
  • Willson Contreras (hand) will play for Boston, while Aaron Judge (calf) is not healthy enough to go for New York.
  • Game 1 is critical in these best-of-three series, as last year’s Yankees are the only team to win after losing Game 1 under this format.

A long and winding roller coaster of a season for the Boston Red Sox has delivered them to Yankee Stadium for Game 1 of the Wild Card Series.

While the Red Sox carried some expectations for a repeat postseason performance into the season, those were essentially dashed by late June, when the Red Sox were 14 games under .500.

Of course, they turned it around in record fashion, going 32-5 from June 25 to Aug. 7 to flip the season on its head.

That was some story, but ultimately, what happens this week in New York will determine whether this year’s team made proper progress, or whether it’ll be another long offseason in Boston.

Game 1 pits Cy Young shoo-in Cam Schlittler against Payton Tolle, with first pitch coming shortly after 8 p.m. ET. Follow all the action in our live blog below.
