Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story is headed to the injured list.

The team placed him on the 10-day IL with a sports hernia ahead of Saturday’s game against the Atlanta Braves. Infielder Nick Sogard was recalled from Triple-A Worcester as the corresponding move.

Story, 33, said he has been dealing with the issue since spring training. The injury worsened at the end of April and has persisted.

Story said he and the Red Sox are “unsure” if he will need surgery to repair the hernia.

“We’re still unsure, but possbily,” he said about potentially going under the knife (via MassLive’s Chris Cotillo and Christopher Smith). “We’re trying to get the best information, not make a rushed decision. Obviously, surgery is not ideal or wanted, so trying to navigate this thing as best we can with the information that we have.”

Story said recovery time for sports hernia surgeries is between 6-10 weeks, but he doesn’t want to think about that possibility yet.

Injuries have plagued Story’s Boston tenure since signing in 2022. He dislocated his left shoulder in April 2024, which kept him sidelined until September. He also underwent internal brace surgery on his right elbow in 2023, preventing him from making his season debut until August. A broken right wrist held him out of over 30 games in 2022.

Story has struggled both at the plate and defensively this season coming off a spectacular 2025. He’s batting .206 with a .244 on-base percentage and .547 OPS (9th-worst in MLB). Despite striking out in 32.4 percent of his at-bats, he has consistently batted in the top half of the lineup under both ex-manager Alex Cora and interim skipper Chad Tracy.

Story has also committed six errors in 39 games at shortstop (.958 fielding percentage), tied for most at the position in the American League.

Replacing him at shortstop in Saturday’s game is Andruw Monasterio, who’s batting eighth. Marcelo Mayer continues to field second base, though Story’s absence could open the door for Mayer to receive playing time at his original position at short. Tracy said a more definitive prognosis for Story would play a factor in whether he moves Mayer over to shortstop.

The Red Sox primarily played Mayer at third base in his rookie season last year, but opted to make him the starting second baseman this season in favor of Caleb Durbin at third and Story at short. Second is the only position Mayer has fielded in 2026.
