Eagles
Well the Philadelphia Eagles lost 38-21 to the Dallas Cowboys but luckily they didn’t inspire any hope by finally playing confident offense with a real shot at the end. If you made the wise-decision to not watch the game or turn it off early, that’s sarcasm. It was a very different Eagles team than normal we saw. This time the offense stepped up while the defense was uninspired.
With that loss, I’m going to drop the scorching-hot take that the Eagles aren’t going to win the Super Bowl this year. I know, there’s plenty of games left and anything can happen. That said, usually this hope has some substance and I’m not seeing much from this Eagles roster. It doesn’t help that over 20 players were on the injury report. That said, the old saying is you learn more from a loss than you do in a win. So let’s take a look at some things we learned.
This was one of the worst defensive performances in the Vic Fangio era. The Cowboys punted only twice the entire game. The Eagles had zero turnovers. A good defense gets off the field. Overall the Eagles have been a good defense. I will say they were due for a regression. They’ve spent a lot of time on the field. They have 180:52 minutes on offense and 239:08 minutes on defense. Ignore the formatting, no sites I saw were publishing this total.
The defensive line specifically had a bad game. Zero sacks and just six pressures the entire night. They got absolutely gashed for 204 yards on ground (155 yards just from Javonte Williams alone). The worst part is that it didn’t come from an outlier long run. The Cowboys averaged 5.37 yards per rush with their longest run going for 34 yards. Just a slow death by a thousand cuts for every run. It also helps when you get these running lanes as a back.
While mostly a bleak game, there were a couple positives. First up, Makai Lemon got his first touchdown. It was a nice little catch with an extension over the goal line. I’m all for the Eagles to develop their wide receivers. Hopefully this development goes to other positions as well. I’m officially joining the campaign to have Uar Bernard and Joshua Weru make their debuts. Why not? Let’s get weird to end the year. That’s not even the weirdest idea I’ll pitch here.
The other positive is that we can put to bed the “is Tanner McKee going to take the QB1 job from Jalen Hurts?” take. Okay I like Tanner McKee, as a backup. That might be his ceiling and that’s fine. He had an actual shot to win this game. Down 31-21 with about 8 minutes left, Tanner McKee threw a costly interception. This is the biggest difference between him and Hurts. When was the last time a Jalen Hurts late costly turnover caused the Eagles to lose? Sure there are some, but Hurts has always handled himself well in late-game situations. Now we just need to wait for Hurts to get healthy and ideally play football again.

And lastly we have a question. Who’s going to play running back for the Eagles? Saquon was clearly still hurt when he decided to play Monday. You should admire his toughness to play. At the same time, I would put him on IR for the rest of the year. My hope is that the Eagles go full Vince Papale and just let strangers show up for a chance to play. No this isn’t a biased take from a guy who has a could years of high school running back under his belt.
Either way the Eagles are going to be cursing televisions again on a national broadcast Sunday night. Should this game be flexed? Absolutely. Am I going to laugh when people complain about putting up with this? Also yes. But hey, at the end of the day just remember that Lebron James is a Philadelphia 76er.
