The Red Sox and Rays were rained out Saturday, setting up an unusual doubleheader: July 17, the first day after the All-Star break.
The announcement of the postponement on the Fenway Park video board — about 14 minutes before scheduled first pitch — was greeted by boos from fans who had been braving the elements.
For the Sox, the timing wasn’t terrible. Instead of facing Nick Martinez (1.71 ERA) on Saturday and Drew Rasmussen (2.95 ERA) on Sunday, they will draw just Martinez in the series finale.
The Red Sox probably will push back their scheduled starter, Payton Tolle, to Sunday as well. That allows them to wait to pitch Brayan Bello, likely during the Tuesday-Thursday series with the Phillies and potentially behind an opener.
The July 17 twinbill will be of the split-admission variety, meaning two different crowds. Tickets for Saturday’s game will be good for only the 1:35 p.m. game that day.
