The trial of accused serial rapist Alvin Campbell Jr. will get underway Monday with opening statements as attorneys lay out the cases for Campbell’s guilt or innocence.
Prosecutors say Campbell, the elder brother of Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell, sexually assaulted nine women between 2017 and 2019, often posing as a rideshare driver to target women leaving Boston bars.
Campbell, now 45, has pleaded not guilty to a slew of rape, kidnapping, and indecent assault and battery charges, among other counts.
Monday’s opening statements are several years in the making; Campbell’s case has been delayed several times since his initial arrest in January 2020.
AG Andrea Campbell said last week she is “praying for the survivors and all those affected” as her brother’s trial begins.
“This is an incredibly difficult situation for everyone involved, and I carry that weight with me, including in my prayers for my brother,” she added. “The case is now before the court, and I respect the judicial process as it moves forward.”
