Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis choose ‘brilliant name’ for new joey at Australia Zoo

Robert Irwin has shared the surprising royal inspiration behind the name of Australia Zoo’s newest family member.

In a video shared on Instagram, the young wildlife warrior revealed Prince William and Princess Catherine’s three children played a special part in naming the zoo’s new joey.

“Introducing Cwtch, the newest member of the Australia Zoo family, a gorgeous eastern grey kangaroo joey,” Robert posted alongside a video of the newborn.

“Cwtch, which means ‘cuddle’ in Welsh, was named by Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.”

In the video, which features Robert alongside the kangaroos, the young conservationist explains the animals are the “icons of Australia” and says he is excited to introduce the newest member of the clan.

“I’m very proud to announce that my friends, the Wales family, helped us to name our beautiful new joey,” Robert said.

He went on to explain Cwtch is a fitting name for a joey kangaroo because at that age they love cuddles and spend most of their time inside their mother’s pouch.

“I want to say a particular thank you to Prince George, Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte for your help in finding this little one a brilliant name,” Robert added.

“Thank you for your support with our wildlife conservation efforts.”

The latest collaboration between the two families further highlights the growing bond between William and Robert, who share a passion for protecting the environment.

Last year, during the annual Steve Irwin Gala in Brisbane, William honoured the late Steve Irwin with a heartfelt tribute, making a surprise appearance via video.

Prince William opened the evening with a special message.

“Steve’s mission in life was to safeguard life on our planet and tonight’s event is all about carrying forward that dedication to conservation and the natural world,” the Prince of Wales said.

“He advocated for wildlife and wild places across the globe, dreamed of clean air, abundant, healthy oceans and a stable climate for the future generations.”

William added “today his family continue this work towards these critical goals”, speaking fondly about his friend and Steve’s son, Robert.

The Prince of Wales has long championed environmental protection through his Earthshot Prize.

Robert also serves as an ambassador for the Earthshot Prize — the organisation William founded to “spotlight and champion the most innovative solutions to the world’s greatest environmental challenges”.
