Meanwhile Melbourne Victory’s Nishan Velupillay and Socceroos stalwart Mathew Leckie (Melbourne City) have also been selected by Socceroos boss Tony Popovic to join the crucial training camp after both Melbourne sides exited the Isuzu UTE A-League Finals Series.

Joining the six Isuzu UTE A-League players in the camp will be Leicester City defender Harry Souttar and former Sydney FC defender Hayden Matthews, who now plays for English Championship side Portsmouth.

The Socceroos will hold their pre-camp in Sarasota, Florida, before then heading to California where they’ll face co-hosts Mexico in a pre-tournament friendly on May 30 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Popovic will now use the early training camp to assess any additional players before finalising his final 26-player squad, which is due to be announced on June 1.

“I am looking forward to departing for the United States this week to begin our FIFA World Cup 2026 preparations, starting with our pre-camp in Sarasota,” said Popovic.

“We will use the pre-camp as an opportunity to observe and assess a number of players, with our first arrivals due this week.

“There is still a lot to play out. Most league seasons are ongoing and we continue to monitor a large number of players as we enter this critical period for selecting our final squad.

“The aim is to have as many players as possible available and in contention before finalising our World Cup squad. We are required to make that decision by June 1, and that remains the most important day from a selection perspective.”
