Peshawar Zalmi Head Coach Ottis Gibson, has thrown his full support behind star batter Babar Azam ahead of the 2026 Pakistan Super League (PSL 11).
Babar Azam has faced intense scrutiny in recent months following Pakistan’s early exit from the T20 World Cup 2026. Critics have questioned his strike rate and adaptability to modern T20 demands.
However, Gibson believes the issue is not technical. Instead, he pointed to the constant criticism on social media as a key factor impacting Babar’s confidence.
Speaking during an online interaction, Gibson said the batter does not need to overhaul his game, but rather protect his mindset from external negativity. He noted that persistent criticism around strike rate and run-scoring can weigh heavily on a player even before stepping onto the field.
The Zalmi coach emphasized that his primary advice to Babar Azam is to block out the noise and focus on preparation. According to Gibson, the right approach is to concentrate on role clarity, especially as an opening batter, building partnerships, and adapting to match situations rather than worrying about outside opinions.
Gibson also made it clear that a player of Babar’s caliber does not require basic coaching, stressing that the focus should instead be on mental clarity and confidence.
Looking ahead, the former West Indies coach wants Babar Azam to reconnect with the fearless mindset that defined his early career. He believes regaining that sense of freedom and freshness will allow the top-order batter to perform at his natural best.
Gibson added that the team management, including experienced figures like Misbah-ul-Haq, will work collectively to support Babar and help him return to peak form during PSL 11.
With Zalmi banking heavily on their skipper, all eyes will now be on whether Babar Azam can silence critics and deliver a strong comeback in the upcoming season.
