Peshawar Introduces New Rules for Private Taxis

The Peshawar administration has ordered the registration of private taxis, introduced standardized uniforms and color schemes, and directed the immediate closure of more than 100 illegal transport services to ease traffic congestion and improve passenger safety.

The decisions were taken during a meeting chaired by the Riaz Khan Mahsud, who also heads the Regional Transport Authority. Officials reviewed traffic conditions and public transport operations across the city.

Under the new directives, all private taxis operating in Peshawar must register with the Excise Department. Registered taxis will receive a uniform color scheme and display QR-code stickers. Authorities said they will take legal action against unregistered vehicles, including fines and confiscation.

The administration also ordered the closure of more than 100 illegal transport operations, including unauthorized rickshaws and speed stations. Officials said contractors running these services will face arrest.

To improve traffic flow, authorities decided to close unnecessary U-turns on Charsadda and Kohat roads and launch an operation against encroachments. Officials will also relocate BRT stations causing congestion to open areas.

The meeting further decided to form joint teams of assistant commissioners, traffic police, and transport officials to act against illegal rickshaws, Qingqis, and loaders operating along the BRT corridor.

In addition, the administration imposed restrictions on trucks, tractor trolleys, and other freight vehicles entering major city roads before 10:00pm. Authorities also directed law enforcement and regulatory agencies to shift roadside check posts to open spaces to keep traffic moving smoothly.
