For the first time ever, the Orange Line will operate at speeds of up to 55 miles per hour in both directions between North Station and Assembly, the MBTA announced.

The increased speeds between Assembly and North Station have been made possible through recent infrastructure work, the MBTA said in a press release Sunday.

In August 2025, Orange Line service reached 55 mph between Oak Grove and Assembly, thanks to the MBTA’s Track Improvement Program from 2023 to 2024, the transit authority said.

Previously, the Orange Line’s top speed was 40 mph, the T said in August.

“We have removed slow zones, upgraded signal systems, scaled accessibility efforts, delivered new fleets, and worked smartly to improve infrastructure across the entire MBTA system under the leadership of Healey-Driscoll Administration,” Interim Secretary and MBTA General Manager Phil Eng said in the release. “Today we are proud to deliver improvements that will make travel even more efficient giving riders back more time in their days.”

Overall, Orange Line service has increased by 76 percent every weekday since winter 2023, and trip times have decreased, Eng said.
