Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday inaugurated an Olympic-standard swimming pool built at a cost of Rs 9.50 crore in Sangrur and said the district is set to emerge as a nursery for Asian, world and Olympic champions.
Addressing a gathering after the inauguration, Mann said the new facility was a major step in strengthening sports infrastructure in Punjab and restoring the state’s position as the number one sporting state in the country. He also urged parents in Sangrur and nearby areas to encourage their children to take up sports, and said the government would ensure there was no shortage of facilities or funds for promoting sports.
Mann said the day was one of immense pride and joy for the people of Sangrur, especially the youth, as the newly-built swimming pool had been dedicated to them. “This swimming pool is not merely a building, but it will also serve as a nursery for our future Olympians,” he said.
He said the pool had been built to international standards and Olympic specifications. According to Mann, the pool measures 50×21 metres, has a depth ranging from 4.5 feet to 7.5 feet, and has a water-holding capacity of 2.5 lakh litres.
The Chief Minister said separate modern shower facilities, changing rooms, dedicated rooms for coaches and storage rooms had been provided for athletes. He added that a modern gymnasium had also been set up to help athletes strengthen and condition their muscles, and that a dedicated mini swimming pool had been developed for children below the age of seven.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to improving sports infrastructure across Punjab, Mann said 3,100 stadiums were being built across the state to promote sports and steer the youth away from drugs.
He said the new Sangrur facility would support young athletes and strengthen the state’s sporting ecosystem.
