Before putting on a show against the Patriots in Week 3 of the preseason, Browns QBs Dillon Gabriel and Taylen Green had the same agenda.
Throughout the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback competition, Dillon Gabriel and Taylen Green have been forgotten options. They both entered Week 3 of the preseason looking to change the narrative.
Gabriel and Green both knew they’d have ample time to make a name for themselves throughout the contest. It was their opportunity to let it rip, via Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal.
“We were laughing, just telling each other, f**k around and find out,” Gabriel said.
The quarterbacks each made the most of their opportunity, helping the Browns earn a 37-13 victory over the New England Patriots. Gabriel completed 12-of-15 passes for for 186 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Green led Cleveland with eight rushes for 66 yards, completing 5-of-7 passes for another 27 yards.
Gabriel showed explosion with his arm and Green his legs. But when it comes to climbing up the depth chart, it may not matter. Head coach Todd Monken said things would remain unchanged – with Deshaun Watson starting – despite both player’s performances.
Where that leaves Gabriel and Green is yet to be seen. Monken is crafting his first roster with the Browns and could opt to take all four. If he only wants three, perhaps a trade is in the works.
Both Gabriel and Green are both clearly aware of the situation in front of them. They took a headstrong approach in the preseason finale, rather than sulking. The quarterbacks wanted to prove they have plenty to offer the NFL. While it may not change their immediate fortunes, it’ll at least leave a lasting impression as they navigate their next steps.
