Nitin Nabin appointed BJP national working president after fifth consecutive Bankipur win

After months of deliberation over who would replace JP Nadda as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president, the party on Sunday announced Bihar minister Nitin Nabin as its new chief. At 45, Nabin also became the youngest-ever president of the party. Previously, Nitin Gadkari had become the youngest person to hold the party’s top post in 2009 at the age of 52.

A minister holding the Road Construction portfolio in the Nitish Kumar–led Bihar government, Nabin secured his fifth consecutive win from the Bankipur Assembly constituency, one of BJP’s urban strongholds in Patna, this year.

Securing 98,299 votes, he defeated RJD candidate Rekha Kumari by a margin of 51,936 votes. Belonging to a political family, Nabin entered electoral politics following the death of his father, veteran BJP leader Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, and has retained his hold on Bankipur since his by-election victory in 2006.

He has also played an active role in the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and currently serves as the Road Construction Minister in the Nitish Kumar–led Bihar government.

The ruling party at the Centre has appointed Nitin Nabin as its National Working President as part of a major organisational reshuffle, marking a transition in the party’s top leadership. Incumbent BJP president JP Nadda, who was appointed in January 2020, has completed his original term after receiving multiple extensions to steer the party through key political milestones, including the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Meanwhile, Nadda, described him as a “dynamic BJP leader from Bihar and a minister in the Bihar government.”

Nadda further expressed his “full confidence” that Nitin would set “new benchmarks imbued with the spirit of nation-building and public service” for the organisation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Describing him as a hardworking Karyakarta, PM Modi took to X to call him a “young and industrious leader with rich organisational experience and has an impressive record as MLA as well as Minister in Bihar for multiple terms.”

Congratulating him on securing the top post in the organisation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote: “He has diligently worked to fulfil people’s aspirations. He is known for his humble nature and grounded style of working. I am confident that his energy and dedication will strengthen our Party in the times to come. Congratulations to him on becoming the BJP National Working President.”
