Claire Mooney has been confirmed as the new Music Director at triple j, after the youth broadcaster opened the senior programming role to public applications.
The appointment marks a new chapter for the national youth station, with Mooney taking over a position previously held by influential figures Arnold Frolows and Richard Kingsmill. She steps into the role after serving as Music Director for triple j’s Unearthed, where she oversaw the discovery and promotion of emerging Australian artists.
When she accepted the Unearthed role last year, Mooney publicly acknowledged the influence of Kingsmill, highlighting his lasting contribution to Australian music and her own career.
“If I could dedicate this role to someone it would be you.
I’m so honoured to keep your passion, legacy and impact for Australian music going.”

Mooney brings eight years of experience within triple j to the position. Prior to her Unearthed appointment, she worked as assistant music director at the youth network. Her earlier career included a stint at SYN 90.7, where she was responsible for booking interviews with local artists and bands, along with an EP role on Australian music program The Hoist.
Nick Findlay, Manager, Music Programming, said Mooney’s leadership at Unearthed demonstrated her suitability for the top music job.
“Claire lives and breathes new music and has an incredible passion for breaking Australian talent, which we saw time and time again in her recent role as Music Director during her tenure at Unearthed.
As triple j’s new Music Director, she will lead the music that soundtracks the lives of young people in Australia well into the future.”
Commenting on her promotion, Mooney said the role carried both personal and professional significance, noting she is the first woman to hold the Music Director title at the station.
“What a privilege it is to step into this new era of triple j as our first female Music Director.
I feel so honoured and excited to continue the legacy that’s been built by my mentors.
We are so lucky to have a station like triple j exist in this country: one that authentically celebrates music, art and culture, and reflects and soundtracks the lives of young people around the country.
I’d like to think there is no place more obsessed with Australian music, and I can’t wait to help shape, support and champion the next generation of artists, alongside our passionate, hard-working triple j team and every listener who comes along for the ride.”
