Netflix is taking My Brilliant Career beyond its upcoming premiere, with the Australian drama at the centre of a broader celebration of writers, creativity and homegrown storytelling.
As the cast and creative team gathered in Sydney alongside some of the country’s leading authors and cultural voices, the streamer also highlighted its recently announced initiatives centred on Australian writers.
Hosted at The James in Sydney, the luncheon brought together the stars and creative team behind My Brilliant Career with leading Substack writers and cultural voices for a discussion about ambition, authorship and forging an independent path.

The event featured a panel hosted by author and Substack writer Bri Lee alongside lead actor Philippa Northeast, writer and executive producer Liz Doran, and executive producer Chloe Rickard.
The gathering also included cast members Kate Mulvany and Miah Madden, directors Alyssa McClelland and Anne Renton, and Netflix ANZ Head of Content Amanda Duthie, with the discussion drawing on the themes of Miles Franklin’s heroine, Sybylla Melvyn, and the upcoming series.

The Sydney luncheon forms part of a broader partnership between Netflix and Substack, which will continue throughout August with an original essay series featuring Chloe Rickard, Liz Doran, Samantha Wills, Bri Lee, Anita Heiss and Lab Muffin’s Dr Michelle Wong, alongside several other Australian writers.
The collaboration follows the recent launch of The Next Brilliant Career, a nationwide search for emerging Australian screenwriters being delivered in partnership with the Australian Writers’ Guild and Australia’s state and territory screen agencies, with applications open until 18 August.
My Brilliant Career premieres globally on Netflix on 13 August.
