A woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut has been arrested for allegedly conspiring with her lover to murder her six-year-old son after the child became an obstacle to their relationship, police said, days after the alleged killer was taken into custody and confessed to the crime.
The arrest comes days after police detained the woman’s alleged lover, Arpit Sharma, who confessed to killing the boy and dumping his body in a forested area in the Hastinapur region.
According to investigators, the case began on June 16 when the child’s grandmother approached Bahsuma police station, alleging that Sharma had taken her grandson away in a WagonR car and expressing fears for the child’s safety. A case was registered and multiple police teams were formed to trace the missing boy.
Using CCTV footage, surveillance data and other technical evidence, police tracked down Sharma, a resident of Muzaffarnagar district. During interrogation, he allegedly admitted to taking the child to a nearby field, killing him and concealing the body. Police later recovered the body, along with the murder weapon and the vehicle allegedly used in the crime.
As the investigation progressed, police found evidence pointing to the involvement of the boy’s mother, Gurpreet Kaur. Officers recovered chats, video call records and other digital communications between Kaur and Sharma, which they said indicated a conspiracy to eliminate the child.
Police alleged that Kaur was aware her lover was taking the boy away with the intention of killing him and had actively participated in the plot. During questioning, she allegedly admitted knowing about the plan in advance.
Meerut Rural Superintendent of Police Abhijeet Kumar said digital evidence collected during the probe, including conversations between the two accused, corroborated their involvement in the crime.
Investigators believe the child was killed because he had become a hindrance to the relationship between Sharma and Kaur.
The case has shocked residents of the area, with allegations that a mother conspired in the killing of her own son triggering widespread outrage. Police said further legal proceedings are under way.
