Meta officials came under scrutiny during a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Electronics and Information Technology after BJP members questioned the removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s video from the social media platform, sources said.
According to sources, a senior BJP MP asked Meta officials why the Prime Minister’s video was taken down, who authorised its removal, and why the platform acted against the video while allegedly leaving other objectionable content online.
The MP also sought to know who bore the ultimate responsibility for the decision and whether the company had identified those involved in the takedown.
Sources said Meta officials expressed regret over the incident and indicated they were willing to issue an apology. However, a BJP member reportedly told the company’s representatives that the issue was not merely about an apology.
“The committee is seeking accountability. Those responsible for the decision should be identified and appropriate legal action should follow,” the MP said, according to sources.
The discussion took place during a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Electronics and Information Technology, which examined issues related to content moderation and platform accountability.
