Makala Woods scored in the 87th minute to rescue a point for Wellington Phoenix in a cagey affair at the Home of the Matildas.
Rhianna Pollicina scored from the spot to give Victory the lead, but they failed to hang on to what would have been a huge three points. The draw sees Melbourne Victory sneak into the top six of the Ninja A-League while Wellington Phoenix have slipped five points adrift of Melbourne City as they beat Central Coast Mariners.
Wellington could have claimed top spot on the ladder had results gone their way and had they been able to get their first ever away win over Melbourne Victory, but will remain in second place as the competition breaks for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
The hosts had the lion’s share of possession in the early stages but failed to ask much of Victoria Esson in the Phoenix goal.
Makala Woods was played through and had Wellington’s first sight at goal, but took her shot early and skewed it wide.
Courtney Newbon had to spring into action in the latter stages of the first half and dropped well to her left to deny a volley from Brooke Nunn.
The hosts were awarded a penalty five minutes after the interval when Sofia Sakalis was brought down by Grace Jale. Rhianna Pollicina stepped up and converted powerfully to the keeper’s right.
Wellington finally pierced the Victory defence when Pia Vlok drifted infield and found Woods who finished coolly to bring the game level with just three minutes to play.
Both Melbourne Victory and Wellington Phoenix will return to Ninja A-League action on March 14, facing Western Sydney and Brisbane Roar respectively.
