Melbourne mum Delliah Ledda with stage three breast cancer claims AirBnb denying refund over cancelled Adelaide holiday

A Melbourne mother fighting breast cancer is now locked in a bitter battle with Airbnb after she was forced to cancel her family holiday, leaving her thousands of dollars out of pocket.

Delliah Ledda hoped to ring in the New Year packing her bags for a family holiday she’d booked at an Airbnb property in Adelaide.

Instead, she’ll be in hospital for urgent chemotherapy.

“My whole life has been turned upside down,” she told 7NEWS.

The mum of two was diagnosed with aggressive stage three breast cancer just before Christmas and her oncologist told her that treatment can’t wait.

“She said, ‘Look, I’ve moved other people around to get you in, we need to start treatment immediately’,” Ledda said.

Initially, Ledda tried to move her 10-day trip, but there was no availability without cutting it short.

She asked the host for a refund of $2,500, attaching a letter from her oncologist to prove the dire diagnosis but it was refused.

Ledda’s lawyer sister Stephanie Casauria called Airbnb for help.

“Even when there is a policy, there’s always discretion,” Casauria said.

Despite three hours of discussions, the company also refused.

“My sister shouldn’t be going through what she’s going through and having to deal with this on top,” Casauria said.

Airbnb’s cancellation policy includes pandemics, travel restrictions and natural disasters, but a life-threatening illness doesn’t qualify.

The family has been told they can only get a full refund if a relative has died.

“I just couldn’t believe the lack of empathy,” Ledda said.

7NEWS contacted Airbnb, which responded with a statement saying: “Our customer service team are reviewing the matter and providing support to the guest and host.”
