Melbourne City 0-0 Adelaide United

Melbourne City are still on top of the Ninja A-League table after a tough 0-0 draw against second placed Adelaide United at ctrl:cyber Pitch.

They had their chances, but City couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net with shots missing the target and some solid backs-against-the-wall defending from Adelaide United.

Matilda McNamara very nearly gifted City an opener early when her wayward pass went straight to Bryleeh Henry, but Ella Tonkin was able to close her down before she could get a shot away.

McNamara then had Adelaide’s closest chance of the first half, her flick-on from the corner deflected just wide of the back post.

With the ball held up in midfield for much of the first 45, the score at half time stayed 0-0.

City almost got the second half off to the perfect start when Henry’s cutback found Aideen Keane, but both Keane’s shot and Leticia McKenna’s follow up effort were blocked by Adelaide’s defence.

There was a flurry of chances in the final 10 minutes for Melbourne City; Rebekah Stott struck the crossbar from the edge of the area, Danella Butrus sent her shot just wide and Henry had her effort blocked by a desperate McNamara lunge.

Adelaide substitute Lara Gooch almost stole it at the death for the Reds, narrowly pushing her shot wide left after being slid through on goal.

Both of these teams hit the road for their games on Sunday: City head up to Western Sydney, while Adelaide are off to Canberra.
