The jackpot surpasses the previous Megabucks record of $21.7 million, won in 1985.

A Megabucks ticket sold in Holyoke on Labor Day won a record $29.71 million jackpot, the largest in the game’s history, Massachusetts State Lottery officials said Tuesday.

The winning ticket was sold Monday at King Mart, located at 494 Westfield Rd., according to lottery officials.

The winning numbers were 21, 28, 31, 34, 40, and 44. The winner has one year from the drawing date to claim the prize, lottery officials said.

The jackpot surpasses the previous Megabucks record of $21.7 million, which was won on Oct. 16, 1985, and split among eight winning tickets. It was the third-largest lottery jackpot in US history at the time, officials said.

The previous record for the largest Megabucks jackpot won on a single ticket was $16.35 million. The ticket was sold in Ware and won on Sept. 10, 2022, per the lottery.

Megabucks launched in Massachusetts in November of 1982 and has undergone several changes over the years. Most recently, in November of 2023, the lottery reduced the game’s number field from 49 to 44, which officials said improved the odds of winning across all prize tiers.

The lottery also added Monday drawings to the existing Wednesday and Saturday schedule and restored the game’s original Megabucks name in 2023.
