Meet Colleen Allen, the Future of American Fashion

In other news, Ye is staging a comeback Yeezy show in Los Angeles tonight at the brand’s flagship—keep an eye out tomorrow for a report from my Angeleno colleague Maxwell Adler. Congratulations are in order for Schiaparelli’s Daniel Roseberry, who is having a great week after running the New York City Marathon on Sunday, posting a much-discussed thirst trap on Monday morning, and receiving the Leader in the Arts Award at the Smithsonian’s annual Hirshhorn New York Gala on Monday night. Congratulations as well to the winners and honorees at the 2026 CFDA Awards. More on that very curious evening below, including an interview with Colleen Allen, certified fashion darling and Emerging Designer of the Year winner.

Mentioned in this issue: Jon Ossoff and his tight suit, Colleen Allen, Ralph Lauren, Jill Biden, Melania Trump, Hasan Piker, Zohran Mamdani and Rama Duwaji, and Tim Burton and his new Loewe collaboration.

Fashion Nights Out

The CFDA Fashion Awards on Monday night brought some star power to the American Museum of Natural History: Keke Palmer hosted, and presenters included Matt Damon, Cole Escola, Lupita Nyong’o, Laufey, and Demi Moore. And yet the mood of the evening was somewhat tentative. The Council of Fashion Designers of America is under something of a renovation: Steven Kolb, its former CEO, resigned in September following an altercation with PETA protesters at New York Fashion Week. Serving in his stead is Hildy Kuryk, a comms expert who spent four years at Vogue as its executive director of communications following a career in politics. Kuryk is serving as interim CEO and heading up the search for Kolb’s permanent replacement. On Monday night, she stayed out of the spotlight, leaving most of the audience wondering—and gossiping about—who the new face of the CFDA could and should be.

Rachel Scott of Diotima took the main award of the night as womenswear designer of the year, and Anthony Vaccarello, who just left Saint Laurent, was presented with the International Designer of the Year Award by muses Zoë Kravitz, Hailey Bieber, and Rosé. Ralph Lauren was named menswear designer of the year, securing his place as the most awarded designer in CFDA history. Mr. Lauren himself made an appearance—a crowd-pleaser that also left me wondering if the American industry often puts too much emphasis on its past and not enough on its future. In that spirit, I called up Colleen Allen, who took the prize for emerging designer of the year, and asked her to introduce herself to those of you who haven’t met her yet.
