Man Utd announce special Champions League shirt change ahead of European return

Manchester United will make a special change to their shirts throughout this season’s Champions League campaign to promote the work of the club’s charitable foundation.

The Manchester United Foundation logo will appear on the back of the men’s team’s kit during every match they play in Europe’s elite club competition.

United will display the design for the first time when Michael Carrick’s side welcome Champions League debutants Sabah to Old Trafford on Thursday night.

The fixture will mark the Red Devils’ return to the tournament following an absence of three years.

United hope the prominent placement of the Foundation’s branding on famous European nights will raise awareness of the charity’s work across Greater Manchester.

Established in 2007, the Manchester United Foundation now works with more than 30,000 young people every year.

It operates 129 projects and delivers a range of educational and community engagement programmes intended to help young participants make positive choices.

Ashley Hackett, the Foundation’s chief executive, believes the Champions League initiative will provide an enormous platform for its work and help generate valuable additional funds.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us, offering unparalleled exposure on one of football’s biggest stages during Manchester United’s famous European nights,” Hackett said.

“We’re incredibly proud of the vital work we do to support young people from communities across Greater Manchester, where our impact is genuinely life changing.

“Proceeds generated from this initiative will be instrumental in helping us to continue to deliver our programmes that make a huge difference to those we work with.

“On behalf of everyone at the Foundation, I’d like to thank the club for this fantastic support.”

United supporters will also be given the opportunity to add the charity’s logo to their own shirts.

Fans will soon be able to visit the club’s Megastore and request the branding on either a newly purchased kit or an existing United shirt.

Net profits raised by the initiative will be donated to the Foundation, allowing it to continue supporting young people across Greater Manchester and further afield.

The change will give the organisation considerable international exposure as United prepare to face some of Europe’s biggest clubs during the league phase.

After beginning their campaign against Sabah, Carrick’s men will take on German giants Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig.

They have also been drawn against Roma, Atletico Madrid, Como, Sporting Lisbon and Villarreal during a demanding opening stage.

United’s return to the Champions League brings European football back to Old Trafford after a lengthy spell away from the competition.

The club’s decision means the Foundation will be visible throughout that campaign, regardless of whether the Red Devils are playing at home or abroad.
