The man allegedly crashed into another car that was stopped at a light, resulting in the death of two victims, a man and a minor.
A Paxton man is facing several charges, including motor vehicle homicide, in connection with a fatal crash in North Reading on Saturday night, prosecutors said.
Matthew Sweeney, 21, is charged with felony motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence, and operating to endanger, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said in a press release. Two people died in the crash he allegedly caused.
At about 10:45 p.m., Sweeney was driving at high speed on Route 28 when he crashed into another car that was stopped at a red light. The other vehicle became engulfed in flames as a result of the collision, prosecutors said.
Two people, a man and a minor, were inside the flaming car. First responders and a Good Samaritan tried to rescue them, but the victims died at the scene, according to the DA’s office.
Sweeney was arrested on scene and will be arraigned Monday in Woburn District Court, prosecutors said.
Authorities have not publicly released the victims’ identities as of Sunday afternoon, and the crash remains under investigation.
