Malviya Nagar fire: Delhi orders inspections of 702 B&B properties after 21 deaths – Delhi News

The Delhi government has swung into action following the deadly Malviya Nagar hotel fire and constituted a joint committee to investigate safety violations and inspect similar establishments across the capital.

According to sources, teams comprising officials from the district administration, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi Police and the Power Department will begin inspections across Delhi on Thursday. The move comes amid growing scrutiny of guest houses and bed-and-breakfast (B&B) establishments following the tragedy that claimed 21 lives.

As part of the exercise, authorities have already identified 18 properties in Malviya Nagar that are likely to come under the scanner. Officials are expected to examine compliance with fire safety norms, building regulations, licensing conditions and power connections.

Sources said the inspection drive could be followed by a major sealing operation in several parts of Delhi if serious violations are detected.

Government records indicate that around 702 properties in Delhi currently hold licences under the Bed and Breakfast scheme. Officials are now expected to verify whether these establishments are operating within the scope of the permissions granted to them.

The inspections come in the wake of preliminary findings in the Malviya Nagar fire case that have raised questions over safety compliance, occupancy norms and commercial activities being carried out inside the building.

Sources further claimed that the licences for these 702 properties were issued during the tenure of the previous Aam Aadmi Party government. Authorities are now likely to review whether the establishments complied with the terms and conditions under which the licences were granted.

The joint committee is expected to submit its findings after the inspection exercise, following which further action may be initiated against establishments found violating safety and licensing norms.

The Delhi government’s move signals a broader crackdown on potentially unsafe commercial and residential properties operating under the B&B framework as investigators continue to probe the circumstances that led to one of the capital’s deadliest fire tragedies in recent years.
