Madhya Pradesh to table UCC bill in monsoon session, says CM Mohan Yadav

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Friday said the high-level committee set up to recommend the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state is receiving positive suggestions from members of the Muslim community. He also said the BJP government will introduce a bill on the UCC during the five-day monsoon session of the state Assembly beginning on July 20 and will try to get it passed in the same session.

Yadav said his government is committed to implementing the UCC and is moving in that direction. The state-appointed panel, headed by former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, is currently touring Madhya Pradesh to gather public opinion before submitting its recommendations after studying the legal, social and administrative aspects of the issue.

Speaking to reporters in Indore, Yadav said, “We have formed a committee to implement a Uniform Civil Code and are taking suggestions for it. Suggestions are coming from millions of people. Many good suggestions are also coming from our Muslim brothers and sisters, who have positively accepted the need for a Uniform Civil Code.”

He also stressed the need for a common law on matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption for all citizens, regardless of religion. “When our country has one Constitution, one flag, and one head, what is the point of having different (civil) laws?” the chief minister asked.

At a separate programme, Yadav inaugurated development projects worth about Rs 16 crore in Indore’s Assembly Constituency No. 5, including roads and sewer lines. He also announced a six-lane flyover at the city’s Robot intersection at a cost of around Rs 50 crore and assured that appropriate action would be taken on citizens’ demand to regularise illegal colonies in Indore.

The chief minister’s remarks in Indore brought together the state government’s push for a Uniform Civil Code and its local development plans, with the UCC panel continuing consultations ahead of submitting its recommendations.
