Los Angeles Chargers Select Akheem Mesidor in First Round of 2026 NFL Draft – L’union Suite

The Los Angeles Chargers made a powerful addition to their defensive front on April 23, 2026, selecting edge rusher Akheem Mesidor with the 22nd overall pick in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Mesidor, a standout from the University of Miami, enters the league following a dominant senior season that solidified his status as one of the top defensive prospects in the country. Measuring 6-foot-3 and listed between 259 and 280 pounds, he showcased elite athleticism and power off the edge throughout the 2025 season.

During his final year with the Hurricanes, Mesidor recorded 17.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles, earning Second-Team All-American honors and First-Team All-ACC recognition. His leadership played a key role in guiding Miami to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, further elevating his national profile.

Mesidor’s collegiate journey reflects both resilience and consistent growth. He began his career at West Virginia University (2020–2021) before transferring to Miami, where he played from 2022 to 2025. Over his time with the Hurricanes, he appeared in approximately 39 games and recorded over 24 sacks, contributing to a career total exceeding 35 sacks across six seasons. His production places him among Miami’s top defensive contributors in recent years.

Born on April 5 in Ottawa, Mesidor is proudly Haitian-Canadian. With a Haitian father and a multicultural upbringing, he grew up in a bilingual household that helped shape his identity both on and off the field. His football journey began at just eight years old with the North Gloucester Giants in Ottawa. Known for his determination early on, Mesidor would reportedly walk through snowstorms just to make it to practice—an early sign of the work ethic that defines his game today.

He later moved to Florida to attend Clearwater Academy International, where his talent began to gain recognition, eventually leading him to the Division I level. Despite early injuries and modest projections, Mesidor remained focused, returning stronger to deliver a breakout senior campaign that ultimately propelled him into the first round.

Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz and Head Coach Jim Harbaugh both praised Mesidor’s explosive first step, strength, flexibility, and relentless motor. He is expected to make an immediate impact as part of the Chargers’ defensive rotation, joining veterans like Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu on the edge.

Beyond his on-field potential, Mesidor’s selection represents a significant milestone. He becomes one of the highest-drafted Canadian players in NFL history and continues to highlight Haitian excellence on a global stage. Draft night was an emotional moment, as Mesidor celebrated the achievement surrounded by family, reflecting the journey, sacrifice, and support that helped bring him to this point.

As he begins his professional career, all eyes will be on Akheem Mesidor—a rising star ready to make his mark in the NFL while proudly representing both his Haitian heritage and Canadian roots.
