Jim Boyd, a WCVB-TV anchor and reporter of nearly 40 years, has died at 84, the station announced Tuesday.

Boyd began his television career in 1961 in the mailroom of WNET-TV in New York. He later became an associate producer and then producer of the station’s Emmy Award-winning program “News in Perspective,” WCVB reported.

He joined WCVB in 1972 as a general assignment reporter before moving to the anchor desk. Boyd became a familiar face on the station’s weekend newscasts and “EyeOpener,” along with co-anchoring the midday newscast with Susan Wornick.

Boyd retired from WCVB in 2008. Five years later, he earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Tufts University, the station said.

His career in journalism earned him several honors. In 2011, Boyd was awarded the Golden Circle award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences New England chapter. The following year, he was inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

After graduating from Tufts, Boyd also pursued acting, appearing in films like “American Hustle,” “The Equalizer,” “The Judge,” “Spotlight,” “Patriots Day,” “Ted 2,” and “Unfinished Business,” his IMDb biography says.

Boyd is survived by his wife, Linda, of 42 years and three daughters, WCVB-TV said.
