A Fleurieu Peninsula restaurant offering locally-sourced eats has been featured amongst the nation’s top seafood eateries.
Kuti Shack, located on the foreshore of Goolwa Beach, featured in The Australian’s 10 best seafood restaurants across the country, as the only South Aussie seafood restaurant to make the list.
It’s great news for Kuti Shack co-owner Vanessa Button and her team, who are pleased to see her restaurant featured amongst the nation’s best.
“We’re thrilled to be named amongst the top 10 seafood restaurants in the country,” she said.
“Especially, given that South Australian seafood has had a really hard past six months, it’s great to be able to represent SA.”
The restaurant is the only South Aussie seafood restaurant to make the list, with its fluid menu often serving up local specialties such as Coffin Bay oysters, Port Lincoln bluefin tuna, SA king prawns and blue swimmer crabs from the Spencer Gulf.
“We’re proud to offer unique flavours, such as Coorong carp, on our ever-changing menu, which strongly reflects our local coast as much as we can with what’s being caught at the moment,” Vanessa said.
“We really try to highlight our chef and owner, Brendan Roach, by offering sustainable South Australian produce.”
But it’s their signature dish sourced right from their doorstep, which takes the spotlight, keeping locals and citygoers who make the hour-long trip coming back again and again.
Whilst anglers might see kuti, commonly known as a ‘cockle’ or a ‘pipi’, as nothing more than fishing bait, it’s the star of the show at Kuti Shack, with chefs creating exciting new dishes fusing kuti with local indigenous ingredients.
In fact, there’s such an emphasis on kuti that they even incorporated it into the restaurant’s name.
“I’d recommend first-time diners try our Pipi Spaghetti. It’s cooked in pasta water with parmesan, pepper, and the Goolwa Pipi on top,” Vanessa said.
The news comes following the State Government’s announcement to bring the world-famous Michelin Guide to South Australia for the first time later this year.
While Vanessa isn’t expecting Kuti Shack to be featured in the guide, she’s certainly keeping an eye out for which restaurants will make the cut.
“While we don’t really categorise ourselves as ‘fine dining’, if we’re mentioned in the Michelin Guide as a place to visit, that would be absolutely incredible,” she said.
“I’m very excited to see who will be awarded a star in the state. There are lots of great contenders.”
