Liverpool booked their place in the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday evening with a commanding 4-0 triumph over Galatasaray at Anfield, progressing 4-1 on aggregate against the Turkish side.
The victory represented arguably the finest night of Arne Slot’s difficult campaign, easing pressure on the Dutch manager who had acknowledged before the match that he must have “done a lot of things wrong” for supporters to turn against the team.
The home faithful remained until the final whistle, celebrating as their side reached this stage of Europe’s premier competition for the first time in four years.
Liverpool’s dominance was emphatic, registering 32 shots compared to Galatasaray’s four, with 58 touches in the opposition penalty area demonstrating their complete control throughout proceedings.
Dominik Szoboszlai, donning the iconic number eight shirt once worn by Steven Gerrard, drove his side forward from central midfield throughout the contest.
The Hungarian international had urged supporters earlier in the week to stay at Anfield rather than depart before full time, and he delivered on that sentiment with a clinical opening goal.
Receiving the ball near the edge of the area from Alexis Mac Allister’s corner, Szoboszlai struck first time into the bottom corner in a manner reminiscent of the Liverpool legend watching from the TNT Sports studio.
The floodgates opened after the interval as Hugo Ekitike converted a simple tap-in following a sublime Salah assist, before Ryan Gravenberch pounced on a rebound to extend the advantage further.

Mohamed Salah capped the victory with his trademark finish, cutting inside onto his left foot before curling an effort beyond goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir’s fingertips.
The goal marked the Egyptian’s 50th in the Champions League, placing him alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in reaching that prestigious milestone.
The forward is enjoying his best scoring run of the campaign and has now reached double figures for the season.
Salah’s evening was not without frustration, however, as he squandered a first-half penalty with a poor attempt down the middle that Cakir saved with his legs.

He also struck the crossbar with what would have been a spectacular goal and missed a golden one-on-one opportunity when attempting to chip the Turkish keeper.
Liverpool will now face Paris St-Germain in the quarter-finals next month.
It presents an opportunity to avenge their defeat against the French champions from last season.
PSG demonstrated their potency in their victory over Chelsea earlier this week.

The European competition could prove to be Liverpool’s salvation, much as it was in 2005 when they lifted the trophy despite finishing fifth in the league.
Recent Premier League results have put their top-five position at risk, making continental success all the more crucial.
Hugo Ekitike, who will face his former club in the next round, spoke after the match.
He said: “We deserved that tonight and to be here. We are really happy and did a great job tonight. We could have won 10-0 and missed a few chances!”
