One of the country’s busiest airports has been forced to close after a direct lighting strike damaged runway lights.
Jandakot Airport in Perth normally operates around the clock but flights are set to be grounded after sunset.
The airport operator confirmed almost all of its runway and taxiway lights were knocked out when lightning struck the airfield on Monday, damaging electrical cables.
The general aviation airport is a major hub for emergency services aircraft including the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and is one of the largest aviation training bases in the country.
