Let the Good Times Roll: A Look at the Eagles Going into the Season

Eagles

We’re in the best time of the year. The unbridled hope period. No one’s hurt, OTA highlights are the only news, USA advanced easily (published Tuesday before they play Wednesday), and the Mets stink. Too cliche but it really is sunny in Philadelphia right now. Maybe even a little too sunny since it’s going to be 100+ degrees in the Philadelphia area but we’re staying level. Not to be dramatic but if the sun keeps shining on the Eagles we’re winning the Super Bowl. This blog is going to try to keep the fires stoked and the wood shed full.

The first question is why bang the drum for these Eagles? On one hand they disappointed us last season. Well on the other they won two years ago so where does the coin land? I’m going with the positive side of that coin. The one where the Eagles play to the level of their roster construction. Speaking of that roster, let’s go through it and keep building the hope.

There’s a lot of faith in the young rookies. The Eagles have an exciting first round rookie in Makai Lemon from USC. The best part, he’s not going to have to step into the leading receiver role with Devonta Smith already there. The Eagles also have a number of back up receivers to supplement any growing pains. It’s been discussed but the jump to the NFL can be hard on players so anything an organization does to help, brings ease to the player.

The other exciting player is the polar opposite in almost every aspect. Uar Bernard was the last round pick for the Eagles and has no history playing American football. He’s a 6’5” 300 pound player drafted to a Defensive Tackle role. The dichotomy between those two players is wider than the Schuylkill after a rain storm. That said, he’s set up in a similar position. The Eagles already have defensive tackles so Bernard should have plenty of time to learn the game. Two different players that are building a lot of hype without needing to directly perform like players in the past.

As mentioned before, we have no lingering injuries. While you could argue that anybody in the NFL that’s been in the league for more than a year has something lingering, I mean season-ending. For as bad as the end of the year was for the Eagles, they didn’t have any substantial injuries late. This means no ACL, MCL, Hamstring, Achilles, Rotator Cuff, etc. This means the start of the season should be their optimal roster. Building a group of players that can lean on each other during training camp will pay dividends when they’re on the field together in-season.

Sometimes it’s addition by subtraction. Other teams players are still talking about us like a jealous ex. Most fans will already know the AJ Brown comments that are finally starting to calm down. What others may not have heard were the words by CJ Gardner-Johnson III (CJGJIII) and Bryce Huff. Now I’m not going to breakdown what they said but instead speculate on why.

You don’t complain when you’re happy. When you do it’s usually because you wish something was different. It seems like for all three players they wish they are more respected or beloved while they were here. Organizations are built around players that want to stay. If there’s players complaining about older teams, probably just jealous.

Enjoy these days fellow fans. The pros outweigh the cons. The ball is rolling in positive direction. Sure I may sound like Sisyphus but we can reach the mountain top. We have an exciting team to watch this coming fall. Go Birds!
