In 2006, just as her belief in fashion was growing strong, Leena Bansal launched her first company, Indibala, a fashion buying house that managed production needs for Scandinavian resort wear designers. In those early days, she worked closely with emerging creative talents and realised that many struggled not with creativity, but with the business realities of running a fashion brand. Through conversations and collaboration, she began noticing that while designers were brilliant at creating collections, they lacked operational knowledge, pricing strategy insights, and a clear understanding of how retail behaved.

Gradually, Leena realised that building and scaling a successful fashion label requires more than creativity. Essentials such as client acquisition, pricing models, operations planning, and retail strategy are equally critical. Her experience with designers opened her eyes to the gap that existed between talent and business success. This realisation pushed her to strengthen her own business acumen. She enrolled at the Milano Business Institute where she studied business development. Soon after completing the programme, she launched her second venture, a fashion business consulting firm called Leena Listens. The new company was designed to support designers in building scalable and resilient fashion brands.

Turning Insights Into Impact Through Consultancy

Leena Bansal still remembers her very first consulting client vividly. The young designer was from a small town in France and held a Master’s degree in Luxury Fashion from Dubai. After finishing an internship with a local fashion house, she reached out to Leena for help in developing her own label. Their initial agreement covered six months of support at four hours per week. But as work progressed, Leena was so invested in the client’s vision that she often worked far beyond the agreed hours. She helped shape the designer’s unique selling proposition, refine the business model, and continuously adapt strategies based on research and market insights.

At one point, Leena became so involved that she almost felt as if the client’s brand was her own. When the label finally launched and generated over 100,000 AED in revenue in its first six months, it became one of the most rewarding moments of her career. The success not only boosted her client’s confidence but validated Leena Bansal’s belief in mentoring fashion entrepreneurs with a blend of business strategy and hands‑on partnership. Even today, the two stay in touch, and whenever the designer is in Dubai, she makes it a point to meet Leena.

From Struggle To Strategic Growth And Global Trade Fairs

Indibala’s journey was not smooth at the start. When Leena first launched the company while living in Sweden, she found it extremely difficult to secure clients because of language barriers and limited networking opportunities. For almost two years, her efforts seemed fruitless, and the business remained stagnant. She was doing everything herself, convinced that hard work alone would open doors. It took a bold decision to participate in the Copenhagen B2B trade fair to change the trajectory of her business. Shortly after that event, she set up a small office in India and hired her first employee, a former classmate who became an accountability partner and helped drive the business forward.

This turning point encouraged Leena to join professional organizations and invest in her business development. Over time, she began participating in major B2B trade fairs twice a year and soon clients started coming to her. These fairs became marketplaces where designers sought her guidance and collaboration on new collections. Slowly, Indibala began gaining momentum and recognition in international markets.

With years of experience in creative production and consultancy, Leena Bansal began thinking about a platform that could prepare designers to become truly retail ready. Many emerging fashion talents created capsule collections but assumed they were ready for the retail world. Buyers, however, could easily spot gaps in operational planning, pricing, brand positioning, and supply chain understanding.

Leena is currently working on building structured workshops and a comprehensive platform that will prepare upcoming designers in essential business areas such as financial planning, supply chain management, team structure, delivery logistics, and brand communication. Her goal is to equip designers with strong business foundations so that she can confidently introduce them to buyers and retailers with whom she has built relationships over the years.

Reflecting on her entrepreneurship journey, Leena Bansal shares candid advice for new founders. In her early years, she made the common mistake of trying to do everything alone. Without a mentor, without an accountability partner, and without a team to challenge her thinking, she worked long hours and stayed busy with endless tasks believing that activity equaled progress.
