Kai Trewin has played his last game for Melbourne City

Melbourne City head coach Aurelio Vidmar has admitted that defender Kai Trewin has played his last game for the club.

Vidmar was appearing on the pre-match coverage of City’s game away to Macarthur when sideline reporter Kat Haddad put it to him plainly.

“My first question to you – has Kai Trewin played his last game for City?” she asked.

Vidmar didn’t mince his words in his reply.

“Yes,” he said.

Trewin has been linked to a move to Melbourne’s MLS stablemate New York City in recent days, and Vidmar conceded the Socceroo would be hard to replace.

“It’s a huge loss,” he said.

“It’s been reported yesterday, an announcement will probably be in the next day or so.

“But he was struggling with his knee yesterday from the game last week… so we won’t see him unfortunately anymore.”

Trewin made the move to City before the 2024/25 campaign and played 40 games for the club all up including last season’s grand final win against Melbourne Victory.

The 24-year-old also made his Socceroos debut against Venezuela in November.

City themselves have been on a signing spree this transfer window, bringing in Ryan Teague, Daniel Arzani, Marcus Younis and Harrison Delbridge as they chase back to back championships.

At time of writing, they trail Macarthur 2-0 inside 10 minutes at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.
